I watched this film last night after my friend and sister did. I knew it was violent, but holy moly does this film stretch its R rating to the max. Funnily enough, it was rated NC-17 at a point- albeit not for the reason I would have thought- though director Ari Aster managed to get it down to an R rating. However, in terms of artistic merit and thematic cohesion, this film absolutely rules.
The acting in this film is stellar. Florence Pugh provides so much soul in her performance, and at times, you can truly feel her grief towards what has brought her into the situation she gets stuck in for most of the film. The themes of the film are brutal and harsh, but not nihilistic, drab, or self-absorbed in the way that other experimental, artsy horror films can be (if you want to hate yourself, go watch the needless and pretentious film "Begotten" instead.
The cinematography of this film is just outstanding too. The pacing is slow, but the film has such a profound beauty in its sheer madness that I never got bored for a second (again, I'm looking at you, Begotten. The film starts very simple and with a fantastically peaceful melancholy, but by the end, the film becomes the most chaotic thing I've ever seen on tape.
I didn't even like Hereditary all that much, but this film just rocks. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Maybe I misinterpreted part of your ending there, but I disagree that going to therapy isn't a good strategy for resisting fascism. While going to therapy is an individual solution, I don't think it's an individualistic solution. I don't believe advocating for therapy is mutually exclusive to building a society where people care about one another, I'd probably say it's a great step in getting there. If I didn't go to therapy I would be in a much worse position in my life right now.
I loved Midsommar, but felt that a lot of viewers were probably asking "Did Christian really deserve all. That? The directors cut adds almost 30 minutes with another unnerving ritual we didn't previously see and the side of Christian the theatrical release didn't show. Let's just say he was a world class to Dani on more than one occasion and also to his friends. It really painted the group as more obnoxious too, except for Dani. Just saying, if you were on the fence with it, give the DC a try and if you're watching for the first tine, watch this version.
I watched this movie last night and I was so confused by it after watching it. I dont know what I expected but it wasnt this. The first bit that properly shocked me was the elders suicide - I had to look away when his head was smashed with the hammer, it made me feel sick. Then when Dani is dreaming, seeing Marks face laughing at her through the car REALLY creeped me out. Im not sure why it did - but he just has such a creepy face, and as he didnt even want Dani there in the first place it felt all too real and creeped me out. I also had to look away seeing Simon in the bird house, that was freaking me out. I think he was turned into a blood eagle? But the end scene I had to watch with my dad after seeing Christian put into the bear. Its horrifying to know that he wouldve boiled alive in silence, not able to move or even scream. Just feel the pain. Dani smiling at the end was creepy, showing she had succumbed to the cult and had her new family. All in all it was a good film. But it was so shocking. It wasnt scary, it was just disturbing. I recommend it to anybody who hasnt seen it, but youll need a strong stomach.
